1099-DA PDF → TurboTax CSV Beta
Drop the Form 1099-DA (or substitute statement) your crypto broker sent you. TaxForms reads each sale, sorts it into the Form 8949 box printed on the form (G, H, J or K, or "holding period unknown"), checks the sums against the form's own totals, and gives you a TurboTax gain/loss CSV, a Form 8949 CSV and an Excel workbook.
- Read in your browser: the file is never uploaded
- Each Form 8949 box is checked against the totals printed on the form
- Free preview and box totals check, no sign-up
Files are read in this browser tab and never uploaded.
What changed with Form 1099-DA
- Form 1099-DA is the new broker form for digital-asset sales. For 2025 sales, brokers report gross proceeds; reporting of cost basis starts with certain sales from 2026 onward, so many 2025 lots arrive with the basis marked as not reported.
- The 2025 Form 8949 added boxes G, H and I (short-term) and J, K and L (long-term) for digital assets. Box G or J is for sales whose basis was reported to the IRS, H or K for sales where it wasn't, and I or L if you received no 1099-DA at all. Crypto sales no longer go in box C or F.
- Where the form shows no basis, TaxForms leaves cost basis blank and marks the row "basis missing" so you can fill it in from your own records. It never estimates a basis for you.
How to bring it into TurboTax
- Download the TurboTax gain/loss CSV. It has the five columns TurboTax's crypto gain/loss upload expects: Currency Name, Purchase Date, Cost Basis, Date Sold and Proceeds, with MM/DD/YYYY dates and two decimals.
- In TurboTax Online, TurboTax community experts describe the path as: add investments → enter a different way → Cryptocurrency → upload it from your computer → choose "Other" and the gain/loss CSV type. Review the imported rows afterwards; TurboTax may ask about rows with no basis or no purchase date.
- TXF files (for TurboTax Desktop) have no codes for the digital-asset boxes, so use the CSV for crypto.
FAQ
Does TaxForms upload my 1099-DA?
No. The PDF is opened and read inside your browser tab. Your form, account number and sales stay on your device.
What if the totals don't match?
You'll see a red line for that box with the difference in proceeds, cost basis or gain/loss, and the downloads ask you to confirm before you use them. A mismatch usually means a row was missed or misread, so compare that box with the PDF.
Can it work out my missing cost basis?
No. Working out basis needs your full purchase history and a lot-matching method, which is tax-calculation software's job. TaxForms marks every row with missing basis so none slip through.
Which exchanges' 1099-DA layouts work?
TaxForms reads the table structure (column headings, box headings and total lines) rather than a fixed list of brokers. It is in beta and has been tested on synthetic statements built to resemble common layouts, not on every broker's real form, so always check the box totals panel.
What does the free version include?
Every row in the preview and the full box totals check, free. Downloads include the first 10 rows of each file. A TaxForms pass ($12 once, valid until October 15, 2027) or CleanStatement Pro unlocks every row.
Is this tax advice?
TaxForms is a file-conversion and arithmetic-check tool. It is not tax advice, doesn't calculate cost basis, and doesn't prepare or file your return. Check every figure against your original forms, and ask a tax professional if you're unsure how something should be reported.
