Interactive Brokers → tax-ready CSV Beta
Interactive Brokers can export almost anything: activity statements, trade confirmations and custom Flex Query CSVs. That flexibility makes it easy to end up with a file that lists trades but not the figures your return needs. For US accounts, the Form 1099 PDF is the version your tax figures should match, and TaxForms converts it with a totals check.
- Read in your browser: the file is never uploaded
- Each Form 8949 box is checked against the totals printed on the form
- Free preview and box totals check, no sign-up
Files are read in this browser tab and never uploaded.
What Interactive Brokers gives you
- Activity statements (HTML, PDF or CSV) and Flex Queries, which let you pick fields and export trades as CSV for any date range.
- For US taxpayers, a consolidated Form 1099 (with 1099-B) in the tax documents section of the client portal.
- If you are not a US taxpayer, IBKR provides other tax reports; TaxForms is built for US Form 8949 reporting and doesn't read those.
Turning it into a tax report
- Download the consolidated 1099 PDF from Interactive Brokers and drop it into the box above. TaxForms finds the short-term and long-term sections (boxes A, B, D and E), reads each lot, and keeps wash-sale adjustments as code W.
- It then adds up every box and compares the sums with the totals printed on the form, to the cent. A red line means something didn't match and you should compare that section with the PDF.
- Downloads: a Form 8949 CSV, a TXF file for TurboTax Desktop, and an Excel workbook with a box totals sheet. TurboTax Online doesn't take a stock-sales CSV, so for Online use the per-box totals from the totals panel.
- Broker menus change from year to year, so if a menu name differs, search the broker's help centre for "tax documents" or "export".
Example: one stock sale and one long-term lot
| Description | Acquired | Sold | Proceeds | Cost basis | Gain/loss | Box |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MSFT 20 sh | 11/04/2024 | 05/14/2025 | 8,452.00 | 8,190.60 | 261.40 | A |
| VTI 40 sh | 06/21/2022 | 08/01/2025 | 11,620.80 | 8,404.40 | 3,216.40 | D |
Short-term (box A) and long-term (box D) rows go into separate parts of Form 8949. Figures are made up for illustration.
FAQ
Is my Interactive Brokers file uploaded?
No. It is opened inside your browser tab and the output files are built there. Nothing about your account or trades is sent to us.
Can I drop a Flex Query CSV instead?
Not at the moment. TaxForms reads 1099-B and 1099-DA PDFs, Coinbase CSVs and Kraken ledgers. A Flex Query CSV can be opened in Excel for your own reconciliation.
My 1099 has many pages. Is that a problem?
No. Every section is read and each box total is checked, so long statements are where the check helps most.
What does the free version include?
Every row in the preview and the full box totals check, free. Downloads include the first 10 rows of each file. A TaxForms pass ($12 once, valid until October 15, 2027) or CleanStatement Pro unlocks every row.
Is this tax advice?
TaxForms is a file-conversion and arithmetic-check tool. It is not tax advice, doesn't calculate cost basis, and doesn't prepare or file your return. Check every figure against your original forms, and ask a tax professional if you're unsure how something should be reported.
