Coinbase CSV → Form 8949 Beta
Coinbase gives you two kinds of CSV, and TaxForms handles both. The gain/loss report already lists each sale with its cost basis, so it becomes Form 8949 rows and a TurboTax gain/loss CSV. The transaction history lists raw buys, sells, converts, sends and rewards, so it becomes TurboTax's universal crypto CSV and Koinly's universal CSV, ready for those programs to calculate gains.
- Read in your browser: the file is never uploaded
- Each Form 8949 box is checked against the totals printed on the form
- Free preview and box totals check, no sign-up
Files are read in this browser tab and never uploaded.
Which Coinbase file you have
- Gain/loss report: has columns such as "Asset name", "Date Acquired", "Cost basis (USD)", "Date of Disposition" and "Proceeds (USD)". One row per lot sold. Outputs: Form 8949 CSV, TurboTax gain/loss CSV, Excel.
- Transaction history: has columns such as "Timestamp", "Transaction Type", "Asset", "Quantity Transacted", "Subtotal", "Total (inclusive of fees and/or spread)" and "Notes". Outputs: TurboTax universal crypto CSV, Koinly universal CSV, Excel. TaxForms skips the title lines Coinbase puts above the header.
- Every buy and sell row is checked: subtotal plus fee (buys) or minus fee (sells) must equal the total. Gain/loss rows are checked: proceeds minus cost basis must equal Coinbase's gain/loss column.
Picking the Form 8949 box
- A gain/loss CSV doesn't say whether the sales were on a Form 1099-DA, so you choose: reported on a 1099-DA with basis reported (G/J), on a 1099-DA without basis reported (H/K), or not on any 1099-DA (I/L). Short- and long-term are worked out from the dates.
- If Coinbase sent you a Form 1099-DA PDF, you can drop that too: TaxForms reads the box printed on the form and checks the totals.
- Convert rows become crypto-to-crypto trades using the amounts in Coinbase's Notes column. Types TaxForms doesn't recognise are listed, never silently dropped.
FAQ
Is my Coinbase CSV uploaded?
No. The file is read in your browser tab and the outputs are built there.
Why can't the transaction history become Form 8949 directly?
Form 8949 needs a cost basis for every sale, which means matching sales to earlier purchases. TaxForms doesn't do that calculation; TurboTax and Koinly do it from the files TaxForms gives you. If you want 8949 rows straight away, use Coinbase's gain/loss report instead.
Does it handle staking and rewards?
Yes. Staking, rewards and learning-reward rows are exported as income (tagged "reward" or "other income" for Koinly) with the USD value from the CSV.
Is this tax advice?
No. TaxForms converts and checks files. Check every figure against your records, and ask a tax professional if you're unsure how something should be reported.
What does the free version include?
Every row in the preview and the full box totals check, free. Downloads include the first 10 rows of each file. A TaxForms pass ($12 once, valid until October 15, 2027) or CleanStatement Pro unlocks every row.
Is this tax advice?
TaxForms is a file-conversion and arithmetic-check tool. It is not tax advice, doesn't calculate cost basis, and doesn't prepare or file your return. Check every figure against your original forms, and ask a tax professional if you're unsure how something should be reported.
